sitting up in bed. If space is a premium, a good choice for bedside lamps is a wall mounted with a swing arm. This allows more room on top of the night stand for incidentals like the dreaded alarm clock and offers flexibility with the positioning of the light beam.
Another option would be a fixture that is clipped to the headboard which still offers the freedom of space but is more forgiving if you don't want to have something permanently installed.
The bottom of the shade in this case should be even with your cheekbone when you are sitting up in bed.
Home lighting for close up work at a desk should have a narrow and focused light beam and the shade should be at eye level or just below.
An adjustable arm works well for this as it allows you to adjust the light anywhere you need it.
While a metal shade is smart looking, it has limited range of illumination. Consider one with a dark shade that will direct the light source directly onto the work surface.
A translucent shade helps to eliminate a glare and contributes to the rooms overall illumination while still serving as a task light.
Be sure the light you are using is not reflected on the computer screen.
